Tryphosa is Ess' slave, captured after the Battle of Faliara and given to her as a gift by her mother, Queen Hippolyte. She's brash, cheerful, and seems astoundingly tall and well-built for a non-Amazon. Indeed, Tryphosa was once Faliara's first female soldier, until her existence threatened a political pact. She was left virtually crippled by unknown assailants, and later engineered her own capture by the Amazons, her childhood idols.

Tryphosa was then quietly recruited by Hippolyte to serve as a mentor for Ess, since traditional Amazon training methods were doing little to help her. Tryphosa has since encouraged Ess to break with conventions and speak her mind, and it might just be working. While she has a habit of saying the wrong thing and inadvertently embarrassing her mistress, Tryphosa is fiercely loyal to Ess.
